Teaching is one of the largest professions. Teachers specialize to teach at different levels such as the pre-primary, primary, secondary, senior secondary and university levels. There are specialist teachers who teach subjects such as art, computers, physical education, yoga, music , dance etc. Some teaches specialize as special educators for teaching handicapped or disabled learners.

JOB PROFILE

Primary school teachers teach 3-5 year olds. They are trained to:

  • Help children develop their use of language, numbers and explore mathematical ideas
  • Teach all subjects
  • Introduce scientific and social science concepts
  • Teach creative and performing arts
  • Plan lessons, prepare tests, prepare report cards, meet with parents, attend faculty meetings and conferences, and supervise extracurricular activities after school.
  • Specialist teachers teach music, art, physical education etc

Secondary school teachers specialize in one or two subjects:

  • Teach their subject
  • Monitor the growth and  personality development of the taught
  • Organize and supervise all co-curricular activities
  • Prepare test papers
  • Meet parents, attend conferences and faculty meetings
  • Suggest curriculum changes

Lecturers/College teachers hold a Ph.D in the subject. Their work entails

  • Researching and preparing for lectures and practicals
  • Lecturing  students
  • Conducting seminars or tutorials for small groups of students
  • Setting and marking assignments and exams
  • Monitoring work projects and placements.
  • Evaluating and guiding research
  • Publishing research work
  • Handling student admissions, curriculum development, examiner ship

PATH 1 :  

Std XII Graduation Teachers Training Goal
Stream: Any Any B.Ed Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT)

PATH 2 :  

Std XII Graduation Post Graduation Teacher Training Goal
Stream: Any Any Sci./Com/Hum  B.Ed Post Graduate Teacher

PATH 3 :  

Std XII Special Education Goal
Stream: Any Diploma/ Degree Special Educator

PATH 4 :  

Std XII Graduation Post Graduation Selection Test Goal
Stream: Any Any Any with 55% NET/SLET/ CSIR Lecturer

Training is available in polytechnics and vocational training centers or Montessori Teacher training schools
Diploma in education or Bachelors in education (B.Ed) Graduates of Home Science serve as primary teachers
B.Ed. degree after graduation > Trained Graduate Teachers(TGT’s) and after Post-graduation are Postgraduate trained teachers(PGTs).This training is imparted in teacher’s training colleges. Correspondence/distance education courses are meant for serving teachers only
There are separate institutions for special teachers such as teachers of the blind, deaf and dumb, mentally retarded, craft, music, etc
Postgraduates with at least 55% or an equivalent grade are eligible for eligibility test for lecturers (NET) conducted by UGC, CSIR or similar tests accredited by the UGC. The State level test SLET is for appointments within the state. Promotion is based on performance, duration of service, and research publications
